Salta and the Region

Located in northwestern Argentina, Salta is one of the country's largest and most geographically diverse provinces. Covering more than 155,000 km², it combines mountains, forests, valleys and remote rural communities, creating significant challenges for timely access to specialized healthcare.

Its strategic location (sharing borders with Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and six Argentine provinces) makes Salta an important regional healthcare hub, serving not only its own population but also people who seek medical care across provincial and international borders.

The province is home to more than 1.4 million people and to one of Argentina's richest cultural landscapes, with nine Indigenous peoples whose languages and traditions have shaped the Network's intercultural approach to healthcare. These geographic, social, and cultural characteristics make Salta an ideal setting for developing innovative models of equitable stroke care.

In Salta, access to healthcare is shaped not only by geography, but also by cultural diversity and connectivity. These realities inspired the creation of the Salta Tele-Stroke Network, an integrated model designed to bridge distances, reduce barriers and ensure that timely stroke care can reach every community across the province.
